Solar contract review

Understand the agreement behind the panels.

A solar project may include a proposal, installation contract, loan, lease, PPA, warranty, and utility paperwork. A contract-first review helps identify which document controls which issue.

Review scope

The questions often live in more than one document.

Each situation is different, but these are common areas to organize before contacting a provider or professional.

Parties

Who sold, installed, financed, and owns the system?

Company names that look related may have distinct contractual roles and responsibilities.

Money

What determines the payment over time?

Review amount financed, term, interest, dealer fees, re-amortization terms, escalators, payment changes, and payoff language where applicable.

System

What was promised about installation and production?

Compare the written scope, equipment, timeline, interconnection, warranties, production estimates, and performance language.

Exit

What does the agreement say about cancellation, transfer, or buyout?

Locate notices, deadlines, early termination terms, home-sale provisions, transfer requirements, and dispute procedures.

Loans, leases & PPAs

Ownership changes the analysis.

A financed purchase generally means the homeowner owns the system while repaying a lender. A lease generally involves periodic payments to use a third-party-owned system. A PPA generally charges for the electricity the third-party-owned system produces.

Those structures can affect incentives, maintenance duties, insurance, transfer, payoff, system removal, and end-of-term choices. The contract—not the sales label—is the place to confirm the arrangement.
